Armed vs. Unarmed Security Guards: Which Do You Need?

A plain-English comparison of armed and unarmed guards, what each costs, and which properties need which.

Most properties need unarmed guards

For apartments, HOAs, offices, retail, construction sites and most events, a professional unarmed guard is the right choice. A visible uniformed officer stops most problems before they start, and unarmed guards cost less and are easier to schedule.

When armed security makes sense

Armed guards are worth it for high-risk sites: banks and cash handling, cannabis businesses, jewelry and high-value retail, some churches, executive protection, and places with a history of violent incidents. In California an armed guard needs a BSIS guard card plus an exposed firearm permit, which requires extra training and qualification.

Liability and insurance

Armed officers raise the stakes, so make sure the company carries the right insurance and chooses experienced officers with good judgment. Ask how armed officers are selected and supervised.

Not sure? Start with a site visit

A good security company will walk your property, ask about past incidents and recommend the right level of coverage instead of upselling. APS Security provides both armed and unarmed officers. Call (833) 388-0071 to talk it through.
