How to Check a California Security Company's License (BSIS PPO)

Before you hire a security guard company in California, verify its Private Patrol Operator license in two minutes. Here is how.

Why it matters

In California, a company that provides security guards must hold a Private Patrol Operator (PPO) license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), and each guard must hold a valid guard card. Hiring an unlicensed company can leave you exposed if something goes wrong.

How to look it up

Go to the California Department of Consumer Affairs license search at search.dca.ca.gov, choose the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, and search by the company name or license number. Check that the license is current and the name matches the company you are hiring. You can also look up individual guard cards the same way.

What else to ask for

Ask for a certificate of insurance showing general liability and workers compensation, how guards are supervised at night, and how you will know your guard actually patrolled. A company that sends GPS check-ins and photo reports gives you proof instead of promises.
